Boston Ujima Project, Inc Announces 501(c)(3) Nonprofit Status

We at the Boston Ujima Project, Inc. are proud to announce that we have officially become an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This milestone is a significant step forward in Ujima's mission to build a just and equitable economy for Boston's working-class Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPoC) communities. See our independence website here.

Founded on the principles of cooperative economics and community control, the Boston Ujima Project, Inc. has been a leader in addressing economic power, supporting a new economic model that prioritizes community well-being over profit. Achieving 501(c)(3) status provides Ujima with greater autonomy befitting Ujima’s growth and refinement over our seven-year journey.

We’re excited to engage in wilder strategies as an independent entity, and expand our capacity to build a just economy that centers the needs and voices of our communities.

The Boston Ujima Project, Inc.'s initiatives include the Ujima Fund, the first democratically governed investment fund in the U.S. built by and for working-class communities of color; the Ujima Good Business Alliance, a membership-based association supporting principled, mission-aligned local businesses and economic development; the Assembly of Black Possibilities, a national convening of solidarity economy practitioners, visioners, and translocal partners; and numerous arts, cultural and community-building programs (including a growing arts programming and education, as well as producing a biannual magazine which explores post-capitalist lifestyles.)

The organization will continue to work closely with our partners, members and Boston's residents to drive systemic change and determine our futures.

On October 19, 2024, Ujima will celebrate with our membership, volunteers, and broader community at a launch event for our new entity! We will honor seven years of planning, research, and action, and we are excited to invite anyone and everyone who has paved the way, supported us, and joined our journey. RSVP for the Independence Party here.
