October 6-13, 2023

Join us in Nubian Square for a unique opportunity to have your tintype portrait taken at the Black Magic installation by photographer Adam Davis.

From October 6-13, Davis will be bringing his distinctive 1850s tintype photo practice to Boston, offering residents the chance to have their portraits taken.

In each session, Davis will create two portraits— one for participants to take home and cherish, and one to add to his own archive. During this residency, Davis will set up a studio at Black Market, where he will produce photographic tintypes as part of his goal to create an archive of 20,000 portraits of Black Americans.

Please read below on how to participate:

  • Portrait sessions will occur at Black Market Nubian

  • Each portrait session will take 1 hour and includes a chemical development process. Due to the nature of this process, RSVP time selections are required to participate.

  • We kindly ask that you select 1-time slot for yourself only, so that we can honor each participant per session
