This workshop series focuses on the question: how can we put our artistic practice in service of frontline communities facing climate disaster, land dispossession, poverty, and repression? In answering, we find new avenues for growth in our own artistic expression, more meanings for art’s uses, and methods for both individual and community expression. These workshops are co-facilitated by members of Liyang Western Massachusetts who have visited and integrated with anti-imperialist community organizations in the Philippines. We will share creative activities and practical tools informed by stories and forms of struggle across Indigenous, youth, queer, women, urban, and rural communities. Activities include small group reading & discussion, theatrical tableaus, placard-painting, and silk screen prints. Participants will leave with ways to use art to process information and emotions, express solidarity, educate, and take concrete action.

We begin this month with a collective reflection on our Fall 2026 workshop series theme: Holy Currencies. Through a conversation on wealth, relationships, interiority, and trust, we’ll build from our summer series on Mutual Aid and open the questions that will guide our fall workshops.

Ujima Cafe is a space where community members can connect, relax, and engage with Ujima’s work in a casual setting. Held twice a month through the spring, summer, and fall, we combine office hours with a laid-back hangout vibe, offering free coffee, snacks, and curated menus.

Join Noni Session in this discussion on how holy currencies offer a path grounded in holistic stewardship, in direct contrast to hard currencies which often rely on extraction and oppression to function. Explore how we navigate and prioritize these different forms of wealth. The "Holy Currencies" framework was originally shared with us by a member through the work of Eric Law and the Kaleidoscope Institute. In contrast, we define hard currencies as the finite, external instruments—such as cash, equity, and debt—that the dominant economic system uses to measure and control value.
